James O'Dwyer Dunaway, age 87, died peacefully in his bed in Austin, Texas after a brief illness on March 15, 2015.

Born on August 17, 1927 in Houston, Texas, Jim served in the US Navy during World War II before receiving his bachelor's degree from Penn State University in 1949. After graduation he worked for General Electric, then for a series of advertising agencies, and ultimately settled into his noted career as a sportswriter and editor. He lived for many years in Tenafly, New Jersey before relocating to the Austin, Texas area.

A self-taught journalist and avid runner, Jim attended every summer Olympics between 1956 and 2008 and wrote articles on track and field for numerous well-known publications. He authored the best-selling Sports Illustrated Book of Track and Field: Running Events.

Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Rachel Dunaway Gooch, and is survived by his sister Melanie Kieffer, brother John O'Dunaway and his beloved only son, David Buck Dunaway.
